The Review
Sony UBP-X800M2 4K UHD Home
It's a sleek, snappy system that never lags or struggles with any media you throw at it, from disc or USB. I haven't tested streaming from a home network as I don't have one, but I imagine it's not as good as Plex, but decent in a pinch.Lack of streaming apps is a little odd, you only get the pre-installed Netflix, Prime, and YouTube. Sony used to offer a whole app ecosystem for their players, but maybe they want you to buy one of their smart TVs to get that stuff these days 🙄Note that Dolby Vision has to be enabled manually in the Settings menu per-movie. My TV only supports HDR10, which is fully automatic, so this doesn't concern me.The unit has an automatic power-off if you don't interact for around 30 minutes, even if you're paused in the middle of a movie. I've found no option to change or disable this setting. It also cannot remember your place and pick up where you left off (no Blu-ray player I've ever used has this functionality, though it seemed standard in the age of DVD, why have we lost this?).And lastly the remote has no backlight. Kind of annoying, but not a dealbreaker.I love the Bluetooth support, as I live in a house full of other people and it allows me to watch movies on our big 4K TV without bothering everyone else. Even supports LDAC for lossless quality!Make sure when you order that you tell Amazon to put the damn thing in a box, they tried to ship it to me in the bare retail packaging until I specifically chose the option to make them put it in a cardboard box. You don't want this thing laying around on your porch for all the world to see!
